We pamper our bodies – but don’t forget, our hair needs a little TLC too, says Sarah Merson.Â
Â
There's no doubt about it, many of us are being drawn to spas, not just for body treatments, but to experience some of the fabulous hair products and treatments on offer. Whether completing head to toe pampering or giving tired hair a workout of it's own, the latest hair therapies and technologies promise to leave your hair feeling smoother, silkier and shinier than ever before.

BENEFITS OF HEAT At the forefront of luxury products and treatments is French brand, Kerastase, who, in January this year, launched ‘Ciment Thermique', a revolutionary, triple-action, heat-activated reconstructing milk for weakened hair. ‘Ciment Thermique' is the first ever thermo-activated, leave-in treatment that not only protects, but simultaneously repairs and tames the hair during heat styling. "The technology is such that the heat from the styling appliance actually increases the product's efficiency by reconstructing actives into the hair fibre, leaving hair smooth, silky and strong," says Jane Barnett, Kerastase Hair & Scalp Specialist. And in March this year, Kerastase launched its ‘Age Recharge' collection – a comprehensive three-step, anti-ageing programme for dehydrated, tight scalps and hair loosing vitality. "We all think about the effects of time and the environment on our skin, but forget about our scalp. The new Age Recharge collection is designed to do just this. In order for your hair to look its best, the scalp has to be treated with care and respect in just the same way as your face," says Jane.

HAIR AND SCALP TESTING But how do you know what your hair and scalp needs? Well, the brand new ‘Diagnostic Avance', an exclusive Kerastase service offers, through a complete personal diagnosis, a unique insight into the needs of your scalp and hair. The new system actually uses a special camera to magnify the scalp by 200 times and the hair by 1000 times. This gives a detailed and accurate picture of what's going on and a diagnosis to back-up what is prescribed by your Kerastase-trained ambassador.
Â
Cutting Room Creative in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, is the first salon in the country to use the Diagnostic Avance, and currently has it on trial in the salon. "This new technology has been a massive hit with our clientele, who have enjoyed the benefit of intensively prescribed homecare and in salon treatment advice," says Jamie Langley, top stylist at Cutting Room Creative.

SALON SPA TREATMENTS With the trend for both hair and scalp treatments, Philip Kingsley also introduced a hair spa treatment last year to celebrate his 50th year in trichology. "The Hair Spa Treatment says goodbye to dehydrated, dull or frizzy hair and provides a pampering prescription for healthy hair and scalp to restore the hair's natural bounce, elasticity and strength," says Philip Kingsley. The treatment consists of a scalp mask, super moisturiser, steam, massage and finish.Â
Â
Popular spa brand Aveda launched its specialised Damage Remedy hair and scalp renewal last August to provide its salons and spas with a unique Hair Spa treatment. Aveda Damage Remedy Hair & Scalp Renewal is a high-tech, high-touch salon treatment for professional use only. "If you want to enjoy a facial for the hair, this is the treatment for you," says Angela Kokshoorn, Marketing Manager, Aveda UK. "It targets the two main needs of damaged hair – moisture and strength, and combining aromalogy ™ with therapeutic scalp, shoulder and hand massage." With the popularity of spa-inspired hair treatments, Aveda launched this unique treatment, "to enable all of its salons to offer a spa experience, including those that don't have the space to extend into a spa," adds Angela.

SPA OR SALON? And whilst you can go to the salon for spa treatments, similarly, you can visit the spa for a salon experience. Champneys, for example, has hair salons in all of its spa facilities. "After having treatments, then using the pool, gym, sauna or steam room, rather than leaving feeling a little dishevelled, a visit to the hair salon allows you to finish off your top to toe pampering with a hair treatment," says Kerry Symons, spa manager at Champneys Henlow Grange.Â
Â
Amongst the most popular items on the Champneys salon menu are the scalp treatments. "We look at your hair and scalp and decide what treatment you need – that could be detox treatment to remove the build-up of product or chlorine, or a deep conditioning treatment due to damage caused by blow-drying. We use both Redken and Wella products, and Champneys hope to formulate an own-brand range of hair products in time," says Kerry.
Â
SERENITY FOR YOUR HAIR If you're looking for something extra special, you might want to head to The Hooker & Young Hair Spa. Linked to the prestigious Seaham Hall Hotel and Serenity Spa, the Hooker & Young Spa offers a luxury, boutique range of products and services. "The experience at Serenity Spa is about lifestyle, not purely beauty, so the hair spa works perfectly in this setting. We offer a range of hair indulgence rituals such as Yummy Mummy, Wedded Bliss and Party People, which involves the use of the spa facilities, so we can offer the complete package. What's more, our passion for hair and pursuit of perfection has meant that we use the hottest hair products around, including various hair rituals and miracles by Kérastase," says Gary Hooker.

HOT STYLES FOR SUMMER "Spring/summer trends are moving into a very feminine, light feel. Colours will be nude and subtle, with ashen tones playing a big part. Reflecting this style will be soft and heavily textured hair. For a modern look, try a dishevelled fringe to add punch to most style," says Jamie Langley, top stylist at Cutting Room Creative.
Â
SUMMER HAIR PROTECTION "More damage can be done to your hair during two weeks in the sun than the combined environmental assaults through the rest of the year," says Antoinette Beenders, Creative Director of Aveda. "Ultra-violet rays can deplete its natural oils and sap moisture. Strong winds whip unprotected hair into a tangle causing breakage and split ends. Chlorinated and salt water lead to colour fade and curl droop. Salt grains act as a prism, magnifying the effect of the sun's harmful rays whilst ripping away at the cuticles which leads to dry, dull, lifeless hair."Â The good news though, is that you can protect your hair:
Â
- Use protective products, with sun filters prior to going to the beach. Try Aveda Colour Conserve Shampoo and Conditioner, £11.50 & £13.
- Rinse out salt water and chlorine thoroughly from hair.
- When applying sun lotion don't forget your scalp if your hair is short or fine.
- Use a detox or daily use shampoo— Aveda Hair Detoxifer, (£8.50) removes chlorine, minerals and environmental pollutants and protects hair in the sun.
- Give hair a rest from heat styling on holiday, leave to dry naturally. Mist hair with Aveda Light Elements Detailing Mist Wax (£18), which is lightweight, will not weigh hair down and gives separation and a natural finish. Â
